Planning a Family Friendly Home

Designing and building a home for your family can be one of the most exciting and daunting things we can tackle in life. We interviewed the owners of one of our recent custom builds to get their perspective.

The Scope:

194m2 Family Home

4 Bedroom / 2 Bathrooms / 2 Living Area

Double Garage

What was your brief to Federation Homes?

The brief was to get the biggest house we could for our budget and the section size, whilst still having a reasonable outside area. As a family of 5 with 3 young kids we wanted to future proof the house so that we could stay here long term. This meant giving the kids each their own rooms and also having a separate tv room which can be closed off if necessary. Our architectural designer managed to do this by making the rooms slightly smaller than standard size and making good use of storage etc in the hallway cupboards, wardrobes in the bedrooms and using a study nook off the lounge, rather than requiring it’s own room.

Were there any Design & Build challenges?

Getting as close to the boundary as we could without needing neighbours consent. Finishing right on schedule as we had to move out of our rental early.

What’s some Design Features that you love?

"Family life revolves around the kitchen so it was important to have a highly functional space without losing the design aesthetic – we spend a lot of time here! We also entertain a lot so having a separate media room for the kids as well as a lovely lounge space in front of the fire made having people over so lovely.”

Overall what did you think about building with us?

“I’ve always been very daunted by the idea of building my own home - even though I would have loved live in one. We seriously contemplated building a spec home but after meeting with Federation and talking about all of the possibilities of what our home could be like, we decided to go for something designed especially for us. The whole process was amazing. If there were any problems Federation took care of them immediately and we didn’t have any reason to stress. It went so smoothly that I would consider building again, except for the fact that Federation built us our dream home and we never want to leave.”
